Indian Navy launches second edition of IOS SAGAR to boost maritime cooperation

The Indian Navy has commenced the second edition of the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR initiative on March 16, 2026, reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening maritime security and cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.

The latest edition follows India assuming the chair of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) in February 2026 and includes participation from 16 member nations across the region. The initiative aligns with India’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the broader MAHASAGAR framework.

IOS SAGAR is designed as an operational engagement programme that enables naval personnel from friendly foreign countries to train and sail together with the Indian Navy. The initiative focuses on enhancing interoperability, professional collaboration, and shared understanding of maritime operations.

The programme begins with training sessions at naval establishments in Kochi, covering key aspects of seamanship, naval operations, and maritime security. This will be followed by deployment onboard an Indian Naval ship, where participants will undertake joint activities at sea.

During the voyage, the ship will also conduct port visits and maritime engagements with partner nations, aimed at strengthening professional ties, sharing best practices, and addressing common maritime challenges in the region.
