South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd (CIL), has announced the scientific closure of 28 abandoned mines over the last two financial years as part of its efforts to address land degradation, safety hazards, and unused mining infrastructure.

Out of 54 identified abandoned mines, the company completed the closure of 3 mines in FY25 and 25 mines in FY26.

SECL plans to close another 11 abandoned mines during the current financial year, with the remaining 15 mines scheduled for closure in FY28, completing the phased scientific closure of all identified abandoned mines.
