Indian Railways approves Rs 166.5 crore four-lane ROB project in Vadodara

Indian Railways has approved a Rs 166.5-crore project to construct a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Alkapuri in Vadodara Division of Western Railway. The project will be implemented on a cost-sharing basis with the Gujarat Government, with both sides contributing approximately Rs 83.28 crore each.

The new ROB is planned to address limitations of the existing Alkapuri Road Under Bridge (RUB) near Vadodara Railway Station, which provides a key east-west connection between the Alkapuri and Kalaghoda areas.

The existing RUB has a vertical clearance of only around 3 metres, restricting the movement of larger vehicles. It also experiences waterlogging during the monsoon, contributing to traffic congestion and inconvenience for commuters.

The proposed four-lane grade-separated facility is expected to improve traffic movement and provide a more efficient road crossing while allowing railway operations to continue without disruption.

The ROB will also strengthen connectivity to important transport hubs, including Vadodara Railway Station, the GSRTC Bus Station and the upcoming High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) station.

Traffic studies indicate that the corridor handles more than 1,600 passenger car units (PCU) per hour during peak periods, along with several traffic conflict points and inadequate pedestrian infrastructure.

The project is aimed at addressing the capacity constraints of the existing RUB and improving road connectivity and traffic flow in a key part of Vadodara.
