Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty 50 are likely to open on positive note on January 21, tracking cues from GIFT Nifty trading around 23,411, a short while ago this morning.

The Indian equity market started the week on a strong note as the benchmark indices erased all the previous session losses with a gain of 0.5 percent led by financial, power and telecom names.

On Monday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 77073.44 up by 454.11 points or by 0.59 % and then NSE Nifty was at 23344.75 up by 141.55 points or by 0.61 %.

On the global front, markets in the Asia-Pacific region were mixed, as investors await greater clarity on policies that US President Donald Trump will unveil.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.44 per cent. In Japan, the benchmark Nikkei 225 was down 0.08 per cent, and the Topix was lower by 0.15 per cent.

South Korea’s Kospi edged lower by 0.32 per cent and the Kosdaq declined 0.81 per cent.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng was flat, while mainland China's CSI 300 was behind by 0.31 per cent.

While markets in the US were closed on account of Martin Luther Kind Jr. Day holiday on Monday.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 457.55 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 91454.57 Crore. On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 329562 with a total turnover of Rs. 23533.70 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 1505223 with a total turnover of Rs. 94756.96 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 72658424 with a total turnover of Rs. 9644864.36 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 8244514 with a total turnover of Rs. 550016.18 Crore.

The FIIs on 20/01/2025 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 10379.64 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 732.08 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 14006.75 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 198.29 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -3627.11 Crore and Rs. 533.79
